Meeting on Thursday

Hi Gang,
I think we should be back to our normal call schedule this Thursday,
with everyone back. This message is basically a repeat of a message I sent
out over a month ago. Please read and act on it before our meeting Thursday.

At this point in time, we have basically used up all of our time for the
preparation of the SCE-MI 2.0 spec including the 3 month extension that we
gave ourselves. While we have made a lot of progress during that time, it is
still clear that we have a long way to go on a number of technical issues
and there are a number of issues for which I do not see us converging. That
means we have to start thinking about our course of action.

In February at the face-to-face meeting we had decided to put everything
that we were not finished with into an Appendix so that they could go out as
trial candidates rather than completed and agreed pieces of the
specification itself. It appears to me that large portions of our work would
have to take this path. Also there are a number of issues on which we are
clearly not going to converge at all, such as the support for VHDL and
Verilog-2001. Given that our committee has only two official votes for spec
acceptance, there is no way to remove this log jam and we have to decide if
that means we can identify the elements on which both parties are agreed and
if both would agree to the spec which contains only those elements.

I would ask that everyone think very hard and carefully about what
pieces of the spec they are comfortable with and those that they would if
minor issues can be resolved. Also please identify any elements that you see
no hope of convergence on or feel comfortable enough with the state that
they exist today. Please send this to the reflector or to me via email as
soon as possible so that I can see if the overlap is large enough, and what
possible paths may be possible.

It is clear that we must delay the completion of the specification again
and I actually have to give my status report by Monday, so we have to get to
an answer in this meeting.

Thanks
Brian
