Updates from P1800 WG --------------------------------------------------------- P1800WG meeting was held on July 14 2011 Neil: CC & DC expect to complete their work by deadline, BC, EC and AC are not able to finish their work. No change, to deadline, still October 1st 2011, next meeting August 11 2011. Champions email vote july 1st 2011, 3278 & 3293 were both rejected by the Champions (mostly editorial) 4a. Update and Review from email vote July 1 2011) --------------------------------------------------------------- mantis items 2794, 2112, 2900 2794 Clarify queue methods return status Mehdi - this one didn't reach quorum. There weren't any no-votes. Move: Steven to approve the proposal proposal-2794-3a.pdf Second: Jonathan Abstain: Opposed: Unanimoulsy approved Arturo - why was the argument changed from int to integer? Jonathan - to allow an implementation to detect of there is an x, z Gord - integers are defined to be 32-bit Arturo - there is now a backward compatibility issue In the past, it would have been converted to a 2-state. Jonathan - that shouldn't be a problem. Arturo - an implementation could now not issue an error. Steven - that is not part of this mantis item. It would be an issue that needs to be addressed in a different mantis item. We have discussed that before. - this mantis proposal gets us closer to being able to issue an error Arturo - Good that it has been changed, the mantis proposal was an improvement. 2112 Remove restrictions on NBA assignments to class members [Dave, Steven] 2112_NBA.pdf Dave - he made changes based on the feedback from the email vote. Francoise - what is an "indeterminate error"? Dave - it refers to accessing a null handle Gord - it is an error, but not guaranteed what an implementation will do. It might core dump. Arturo - In 10.4.2, why is there new text about garbage collection? It may be best to state this in the other section on memory management. Jonathan - thinks it is useful to mention the affect of nba's. Arturo - "reclaimed as soon as" we don't use this language anywhere else. Gord - it is just clarifying the part about a pending nba. Arturo - people might think there is something special about an nba reference. Arturo - trying to say that a pending nba creates a reference to an object. Gord - the nba reference holds onto the object. We need to make this clear. Dave - he will add something on this (nba assigns) Dave - users wanted to cast a class reference to a port in some cases Arturo - that is silly. Gord - People can get around it with an always block or always_comb Arturo - a continuous assign is not the right way to do these things. Dave - it was in 6.21 Steven - "References to automatic variables and elements or members of dynamically sized variables shall be limited to procedural blocks." Stu - are users requesting it? Arturo - even if people ar requesting it, it isn't a good approach. Dave - the new example would then be illegal. Jonathan - didn't see how the 6.21 text disallowed it Steven - users could work-around it by using a function call. Arturo - doesn't think this change increases the expressive power of the language. Gord - are dynamic arrays and queues ok? Steven - no longer have the mention of dynamic variables in the new text. Dave - will need to take out the change in 8.4 Arturo - not allow nba to a class member Steven - needs to be a separate sentence - very concerned about a queue (dynamic change in range). - an nba to a Q could be error prone, based on user expectations. - It would be defined, but most likely unexpected results. - dynamic arrays wouldn't be as much of a concern. Gord - class objects are subject to garbage collection. Steven - an optimization is allowed to calculate a memory location to update (similar to a ref arg), that could be problematic. Dave - forces through virtual interface variables. Steven - that should also not be allowed. Should only do a force to something that is static. They are like a continuous assignment. If RHS changes there is a new value assigned. Mark - is a virtual interface considered a dynamic variable? Steven - is should be written in terms of a dynamic reference. - for a force, can't use a variable index to LHS. - was thinking virtual interfaces should be added to this text, but we are having enough problems as it is. Steven - 6.21 says class properties. Should it be saying "non-static properties"? Dave - The new sentence in blue will go away. Steven - thinks we still need that sentence. Steven - what about strings? - probably not quite as big of a problem as a queue Arturo - there are similar problems Steven - similar issues as with a dynamic array, not as severe as a Q. - if a string is similar to an unpacked array, not an issue. Arturo - strings have a dual personality. Dave - could add "or strings" to the text. It was decided to not add strings to the list. Gord - should probably add the text about "non-static class properties" Steven - there is no technical reason why it should be disallowed. Francoise - "non-static properties" is still not there. Gord - a syntax issue in the following change. Dave: version 4 of the document is updated 2112_NBA_v4.pdf Move: Dave to approve the proposal 2112_NBA_v4.pdf Second: Gord Abstain: Opposed: Unanimoulsy approved 2900 Associative array should consider the context of an lvalue to create an entry [Dave] Steven - it is difficult to word it. - "when execution reaches it" Gord - only if it doesn't already exist Mark - what does "target of an assignment" mean? Steven - passing as a ref isn't really an assignment - what you want is when used as an lvalue. Mark - the first time it is written would be more clear. Arturo - what if don't write it? Gord - if passed as a ref arg, that would be sufficient to create it. - if a ref arg is a pointer want a guarantee that the "pointer" is not null. Steven - if passing a reference to an object, need to ensure it exists. Dave - pass by reference, by definition, it must be a valid lvalue. Arturo - can say "it is either assigned or a reference." Gord - doesn't want to say first, "if it doesn't exist is the key point" Dave - Gord - an output along with a ref is an interesting case. - the copy out happens on return. Steven - can use a variable index. array[i] - can change i in the middle. - are we just discussing the wording or the semantics? Gord - output args are implied assignments. Steven - copy out with a variable index, you may not know the final index. Gord - "the first time" is not the write way to phrase it. - do we want to define the concept of an lvalue here? Arturo - that might be too ambiguous - just saying "non-existing element" should be sufficient. Steven - it would be way too complex to have one long sentence. defining an lvalue would be simpler. Francoise- surprised that lvalue is not yet defined, since we talk about it all the time. Steven - it would be tough to word this without defining lvalue. - "used as an assignment or a reference argument" 'used' is better than 'first appearance' - when used as an lvalue Arturo - want to say 'when it is created' - the part about an associate array being created dynamically isn't quite right. Gord - there is some corner case issues but if the intent were made clear when a target of an assign or a ref, it is created and then manipulate it. Steven - "the target of an assignment or the actual of a ref formal" Arturo - would like to keep part of the first sentence that is deleted. "Array elements in associative arrays are allocated dynamically" Then add the new sentence after this. Jonathan - "Some constructs necessitate the need for" Move: Dave to approve the proposal 2900_assoc_lvalue_v4.pdf Second: Steven Abstain: Opposed: Unanimoulsy approved 4b. Continue Review and discussion of top 25 issues and categories: ------------------------------------------------------ Review of the top 25 [+10+3]; 9 have been approved. 2506 Coverage Scott: Version 7 is ready to approve next time. 5. Next meetings 2011 ----------------------------------------------------- Monday August 1 2011 Regular biweekly [Extended] Monday August 15 2011 Regular biweekly [Extended] Monday September 12 2011 Regular biweekly [Extended] Monday September 26 2011 Regular biweekly [Extended] Gord - won't be available for extended meetings. Steven - we get done what we get done. Jonathan - finding time for detailed reviews is the hard part for him. - getting more focus on this would help more than another 2-hour on a conference call. Mehdi - will send out email for the various options for extra work. ----- rest of mantis items for review [information purposes] 2848 Is it legal to assign an interface containing class declaration to a virtual interface [Francoise] [hold for next few meetings: sv-bc is also looking at interfaces] 2845 virtual interface type checking versus interface type that had been defparam'ed [Francoise] 3002 Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) features [Tom] Mantis3002_AOPproposal.pdf 3046 Dotted names within inlined constraints [Gord] 2987 Soft Constraints [Tom] 2988 Defaults Constraints [Tom] 2993 Coverage Cross cover points across different cover groups [Arturo, Swapnajit] 3082 Daniels' top items [3075, 3076, 3077, 3078, 3079, 3080, 3081] 3003 constraint composition [Jonathan, Tom, Ray, Arturo] 2735 ballot comment #48, chaining..
