XILINX FORMS STRATEGIC BUSINESS SEGMENT TO EXPAND DSP OFFERINGS

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 2, 1996 - Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced a new strategic business segment for digital signal processing (DSP). The company named Roman Iwanczuk director of the new group. Iwanczuk, who was formerly responsible for an FPGA development group at Xilinx, will report to Wim Roelandts, CEO and president. Iwanczuk will be responsible for all research and product development for the Xilinx FPGA-based DSP offerings.

"DSP is an important area for Xilinx due to its increasing relevance in many key market segments such as communications and image processing and the unique suitability of Xilinx's FPGA families for these applications," said Iwanczuk. "In order to capitalize on our successes in this area, the need for dedicated resources is essential for us to compete effectively with enabling solutions for the DSP market."

Digital signal processing is an emerging application for field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices from Xilinx. FPGA-based DSP solutions reach beyond the traditional use of FPGA devices in system design. Engineers have discovered orders of magnitude increases in system performance by processing DSP functions in parallel on Xilinx FPGA devices with SRAM-based architectures. Moreover, because an FPGA device is by definition reprogrammable, some designers are creating systems that can be reconfigured on-the-fly with different DSP functions as they are needed. Reconfiguration methodologies are a key part of a number of commercial and industrial products now on the market.

Xilinx currently supports the DSP market through its team of Field Application Engineers (FAEs) and on-line support personnel who are available to assist customers with their FPGA-based DSP designs and offer training classes worldwide. Third-party Xilinx Alliance Program partners offer specific DSP algorithms optimized for Xilinx FPGA devices. In addition, the Xilinx Developers' Program assists small companies in their DSP-related endeavors.

Founded in 1984, Xilinx is the world's largest supplier of programmable logic solutions comprising industry leading device architectures and world class design software. Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., the company pioneered the market for field programmable gate array (FPGA) semiconductor devices that provide high integration and quick time-to-market for electronic equipment manufacturers in the computer, peripherals, telecommunications, networking, industrial control, instrumentation and high reliability/military markets.
