FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

XILINX ANNOUNCES NEW ROUND OF PRICE CUTS FOR CPLDs

Move follows 30 percent price reduction made in January for XC9500 devices

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 30, 1997—Reaffirming its commitment to be the price leader for complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs), Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced price reductions of up to 30 percent for the company’s XC9500 in-system programming (ISP) CPLDs. The new pricing will be effective August 4, 1997.

The company said it has made significant strides in reducing manufacturing costs for the XC9500 devices, which are produced with a proven Flash process technology. Cost reductions resulting from higher production volumes, increased manufacturing efficiencies, and improved wafer yields will be passed on to customers. The latest price reductions range from 5 to 30 percent, depending on speed and package.

"Design wins for the XC9500 CPLDs are at an all-time high and have doubled from the last quarter," said Evert Wolsheimer, vice president and general manager of the Xilinx CPLD business unit. "Customers are choosing the XC9500 devices over competing products because the Xilinx architecture provides the industry’s best in-system programming capability and superior pin locking at the lowest price. Xilinx XC9500 devices have reached price parity with the older EPROM-based XC7300 CPLDs and we expect many customers to upgrade to the new technology."

Wolsheimer added that the number of design wins proves the XC9500 family’s favorable acceptance in many different market segments that use CPLDs, including add-in boards for PC peripherals, digital video disk (DVD) cards, servers, telecommunication switches, routers, hubs, video games, and industrial controls.

"Cognex has been using the Xilinx XC9500 CPLDs for over a year, and in June 1997 we began shipments of our first system to use the Xilinx product family," said Steve Goodspeed, senior hardware manager at Cognex. "The XC9500 CPLD is a key component in the Checkpoint 900C, which is Cognex's first color machine vision processor. Xilinx's flexible pin-locking architecture, high-speed CPLD specs, and in-system programming capability have worked out extremely well in the development of our latest Checkpoint product. Changes to the design have been quick to implement, and the reprogrammability through the JTAG port has allowed quick transition from prototypes to production."
