Problem Description:
A design, possibly one that worked in pre-XACT 5.0 software, produces the
following error in EDIF2XNF:

   Error: 5 No direction/pintype for port:PINBALL/WIZARD

In releases prior to XACT 5.0, EDIF2XNF always wrote out a single .xnf
file.  This meant that EDIF2XNF traversed any user-created hierarchy and
viewed the underlying Xilinx primitives as a single, flat schematic.
Because of this, the pintype properties on the pins of the user-created
symbols were not important, as they were never written out.

With XACT 5.0 and above, EDIF2XNF must write out a .xnf file for each level
of hierarchy, in order to support hierarchial properties such as RLOC and
HBLKNM, which are interpreted by XNFMerge.  This means that user-created
hierarchy must be written out into individual .xnf netlists.  This requires
that the user-created hierarchial symbols have PINTYPE properties on all
symbol pins.

This problem may also occur frequently in earlier versions of Autologic.
Autologic may omit PINTYPE properties when synthesizing hierarchial
symbols, following the rules of pre-XACT 5.0 software.


Solution 1:

Use the Design Architect symbol editor to add the appropriate PINTYPE
properties to all pins of all user-created symbols.  Legal property values
are IN, OUT, and IXO.



Solution 2:

If the symbol was created by Autologic II, a patch is available on Mentor
Graphics' FTP site at supportnet.mentorg.com (137.202.128.4).

Autologic II version A.x requires Patch 244, located in the directory:

   /pub/patches/release_A/autologic2

with the filenames:

   README_P244	       (patch information)
   INSTALL_P244        (installation instructions)
   sg_p244.sss.tar.Z   (SunOS 4.x)
   sg_p244.ss5.tar.Z   (Solaris 2.x)
   sg_p244.hpu.tar.Z   (HP-UX)

Autologic II version B.x requires Patch 320, located in the directory:

    /pub/patches/release_B/autologic2

with the filenames:

   README_P320	       (patch information)
   INSTALL_P320        (installation instructions)
   sg_p320.sss.tar.Z   (SunOS 4.x)
   sg_p320.ss5.tar.Z   (Solaris 2.x)
   sg_p320.hpu.tar.Z   (HP-UX)
