Design Manager 6.0.1: Out of memory errors with Windows95

Record #1613

Product Family: Software

Product Line: FPGA Core

Problem Title:
Design Manager 6.0.1: Out of memory errors with Windows95

Problem Description:
When running XACT on Windows95, running out of Physical or Virtual memory
may cause several problems including:

Out of memory errors, system hanging, system rebooting, general and
memory protection faults, and other strange occurences.

These are some things you can try to possibly avoid these problems.

Solution 1:

Depending on the device you are targeting, you must have a
minimum amount of physical RAM in your system to run our
software. Please consult solution record 701 "Memory
requirements for various parts" to find out the
requirement for the device you are targeting.

Solution 2:

No matter how much physical RAM or virtual memory your machine
may have, Windows95 is still limited to the same conventional
memory restrictions that DOS and Windows 3.11 must follow when
calling our software.

If you are loading any unnecessary drivers, programs, or
environment variables in you autoexec.bat or config.sys files,
remove or REM them out. This will most likely increase the
amount of availible conevntional memory.

Solution 3:

For maximum DOS memory in an MS-DOS session, add the following
line to you system.ini file in the [386Enh] section :

LocalLoadHigh=1

You will need to reboot the system for this change to take
place.

Solution 4:

Force Windows95 to allocate memory for command.com.

Click on My Computer.
Open Ms-dos_6.
Find the command.com icon and _right_ click on it.
When the pop-up menu appears, click on properties.
Next click on the memory tab in the properties window.
Set the Extended(XMS) memory setting to 1024.
Also be sure that "uses HMA" is checked.
All other selections should be set to "auto".
Click on apply and OK.
Then reboot Win95.

Solution 5:

Check the availible hard drive space.
Windows automatically handles swap space size by default.
If the disk drive is reaching capacity, this swap space may
become rather small. If you do not have much hard drive
space, you will not have much swap space.

If this is the case. Attempt to free up space on your hard
drive.
