Record #3190 Product Family: Documentation Product Line: Xilinx Core Problem Title: Why M1 needs Admin Privilege to install on NT Problem Description: Keywords: NT, Admin, Privilege, M1 Urgency: standard General Description: Users sometimes wonder why M1 requires Admin Privilege to install on Windows NT operating systems. Solution 1: The Xilinx install programs require admin privileges under NT for the following reasons: 1) To make certain protected registry entries: The folder that is created is for all users of the system or the domain, and some of the Registry updates require admin privileges (specifically, the driver install). 2) To enable the Xilinx icon group to be shared among multiple users: It was felt that in many installations, a sys admin would perform the installation, and so creating the folder on the user side would be useless for the real user. Also, if multiple people were using a machine, it is desirable to have all of them being able to access Xilinx folder. 3) To install device drivers: Drivers can only be installed by an administrator. The driver (basjdrv.sys) is needed to use the Parallel Cable III. One example of a workaround for this problem would be to created a new domain that has an administrator password chosen by the new group. This will not affect anything on the upper level domain, and yet local machines can be modified freely. End of Record #3190
