M1.4 Turns Engine: ERROR - PING cannot reach node 'node_name'

Record #3344

Product Family: Software

Product Line: Merged Core

Problem Title:
M1.4 Turns Engine: ERROR - PING cannot reach node 'node_name'

Problem Description:
Keywords: PAR, turns engine, ping, error, mppr, node

Urgency: Standard

General Description: When trying to run multi-node MPPR PAR
issues a message that it is starting a job on 'node', however
it seems to hang. When the process is cancelled the following
message appears:

PING cannot reach node sandy. This message occurs when either
the network or the node is down.
This node is being removed from the active list.

PAR done.

Solution 1:

The reason for this is because the Turns Engine uses PING to
ensure the node is accessable.	It is hardcoded into the
software to expect a message back similar to:
NODE_NAME is alive

However, some UNIX systems could be setup differently such that
PING's default uses some options. An example of such
occurrance could be if PING is aliased to be 'PING -S'. This
actually returns packet information and causes the Turns
Engine to fail.

Solution: Make sure that PING returns 'NODE is alive' and
no other information.
