FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

XILINX LOWERS THE COST OF XC3000 PERFORMANCE
Price Cuts on XC3000 Families Range Up to 33 Percent

SAN JOSE, Calif., February 28, 1997-Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced it is improving the cost of performance by lowering the prices for the XC3000 and XC3100A field programmable gate array (FPGA) families. Specifically, the company will offer the faster XC3000A-7 and the XC3100A-4 devices at lower prices. The price cuts are from 15 to over 30 percent throughout the families; the faster XC3142A-4 device has dropped 33 percent to $14.25 in 100-piece quantities.

Because the prices for these speed grades are below the price of the slower XC3000-70 and the XC3100A-5 speedgrades, the company will eliminate these older devices. The faster XC3000A-7 and the XC3100A-4 will replace the -70 and the -5 speedgrades, respectively, and share functionality and footprint- and bitstream-compatibility to ensure an easy transition.

"Throughout our aggressive process migration strategy, we have realized a reduced manufacturing cost for the higher speedgrades of our RAM-less product line and our customers will directly receive price savings on these premium speedgrades," said Sandeep Vij, vice president of marketing at Xilinx. "These particular speedgrades have been most popular among our customer base and because of this high demand, we can offer the discounted prices."

Last time orders to buy these XC3000-70 and XC3100A-5 devices will be accepted until January 31, 1998. After January 1998, all commercial and industrial XC3000-70 and XC3100A-5 devices will no longer be available from Xilinx. Last time shipments will be made through March 31, 1998.

Additionally, selective obsolete thru-hole packages will be discontinued for the XC3000/A and XC3100A families. Discontinuation of these packages are for commercial and industrial temp grades only.

"We chose to discontinue the low volume packages based on low market acceptance demonstrated by too small a percentage of revenue and units shipped. We expect these discontinuations to minimally impact our customers," Vij continues. "Xilinx aids current thru-hole package users through the industry's most customer-friendly product discontinuation program. Customers have two years--a year longer than other suppliers' programs--from notification of obsolescence to the last shipment date to purchase the discontinued devices."

Following a different timeline, the selective low volume packages for the XC3000 and XC3100A families will no longer be available after December 31, 1998 for commercial and industrial markets from Xilinx. December 31, 1998 is the last date to buy these packages. Last time shipments will be made through March 31, 1998. Rochester Electronics Inc. will provide support for the discontinued XC3000 and XC3100A packages after the last time to buy date of December 31, 1998.

Under the product discontinuation policy, Xilinx will provide customers with 12 months notice to place their last-time orders for programmable logic devices that will have a "form, fit, and function" replacement--such as the -70 and the -5 speedgrades--and provide at least an additional 90 days notice for last shipments. For products that do not have replacements Xilinx will provide at least 24 months notice for last orders and at least additional 90 days for last shipments.
