The complete solution includes the following:

• A 12 month license, referred to as a Time Based License (TBL), allows you to use the software to create new designs.
• 12 months of service and support, referred to as a Designer Productivity Package (DPP), available in either Gold or Platinum levels.

The Time-Based License does provide for "archival use" of the software. That is, any designer who needs to modify a design or fix a bug after the one year license has ended is licensed to do so. 

The Design Productivity Package (DPP) provides continuous access to new device architectures such as the next generation Virtex and Spartan products and new features and enhancements for Development Systems and Options. There are two DPP levels offered; GOLD and PLATINUM. 

The GOLD DPP also includes:

Q: I have been a customer for years, how does this effect me?
A: Time Based Licensing (TBL) began August 1st of 1999, if you purchased your Xilinx software prior to that you have been grandfathered as a perpetual user and simply need to continue paying your Software Support Agreement (part number SC-XXX-XXX) that is sent to you. By staying current with your Support Agreement you qualify for the GOLD service level. 

Q: I purchased my new software solution after August 1, 1999, what do I do at the end of my one year license? 
A:  If you are starting new designs after the first year, you should purchase a one year extension to the existing one year license by ordering the appropriate "EX" part number on your Support Contract that is sent to you.
