XILINX, HANDSPRING, AND PORTABLE DESIGN MAGAZINE
KICK OFF THE "COOL MODULE" DESIGN CONTEST

Portable system designers compete for $10,000
and publication of winning design

SAN JOSE, Calif., January 30, 2001, at the Portable Design Show, Xilinx Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX), in association with HandspringTM and Portable Design Magazine, today kicked off the "Cool Module" Design Contest. The Cool Module Design Contest offers portable system designers the opportunity to design a SpringboardTM expansion module and compete for a top prize of $10,000, a free HandspringTM VisorTM Platinum handheld computer, and publication of the winning design in Portable Design Magazine. Design entries of proposed Springboard modules will be accepted through April 30, 2001. The top ten finalists will be announced on May 14, 2001. Each of the top ten finalists will receive a Xilinx CoolRunner® CPLD-based prototyping board, provided by Insight Electronics, and a Handspring Visor Platinum. Finalists must submit working designs by June 30, 2001. Final designs will be judged by Xilinx chief technology officer Bill Carter, founder, chairman and chief product officer for Handspring, Jeff Hawkins, and editor-in-chief of Portable Design, Richard Nass. Designers worldwide who wish to obtain further information or enter the contest may do so online at www.xilinx.com/contest.
