If you have your home directory NFS mounted and log onto Gnome multiple times, make sure ORBIT can talk TCP/IP to communicate with your other gconf daemons. To enable this uncomment the following line in /etc/orbitrc:

ORBIIOPIPv4=1

Restart gconf with:

$ gconftool-2 --shutdown
