Additional Course Notes

This course is being taught for the very first time this semester, and as a result, the textbook is unproven. It will satisfy some of the reading requirements, but not all of them. Therefore, if a particular topic requires additional notes, this page is where you will find links to those notes. It will be announced in class when you will need to visit this site to find these notes. Typically, the notes will not be available until two or three days before the class period in which they are needed.

All of these documents are in either HTML or PDF format. If you do not have a copy of the Adobe Acrobat Viewer for the PDF files, download the free copy from their web site.

Date Supplementary Notes
2-June-03 From the San Francisco 2002 Embedded Systems Conference papers, download and read article number 200/220, "Selecting the right RTOS, a Comparative Study, part 1 & 2" by Michael Anderson. Note that you will need to register before you can download this article.
3-June-03 Sections 1 through 6 of The Linux Bootdisk HOWTO
9-June-03 Due to copyright issues, the electrical principles notes will be handed out as paper copies during Monday's class.
10-June-03 Due to copyright issues, the digital I/O notes will be handed out as paper copies during Monday's class.
16-June-03 We're going to continue our discussion of device drivers. If the book didn't explain the topic to your satisfaction, Dr. B. Thangaruju published a nice article titled, "Fail Safe Port Allocation For Linux Device Drivers" at LinuxFocus.org
17-June-03 I will hand out paper copies of my chapter on position control and feedback during Monday's class.
19-June-03 Please read sections 1, 2, 3, and 18 of the Linux Serial HOWTO. We will also be discussing an application of a serial interface to an OEM device.
23-June-03 After doing the serial mouse lab, we will be trying our hand at dial-up servers. I don't have any chapters of my own written, and the web doesn't have a great number of resources. For now, take a look at Josh Gentry's article, "Linux Dialin Server Setup Guide".
24-June-03 There's no web reading here, only reading from the text book. Be sure to read chapter 2 on user interfaces.
26-June-03 There's no web reading here, only reading from the text book. Be sure to read chapter 4 on Tasks and Interprocess Communication.
