Description
The plastic packages Xilinx sells are not hermetic.
That means liquid can get into the package and damage the die.
Solution 1:
For plastic packages, there's a note on the package to use or install the device w/in 160 hours of o
pening it. What happens to the devices in the package after it's been opened for over 160 hours? If
your device is a plastic package, it has a tendency to absorb moisture from the air. This doesn't a
ffect the device but if it's heated quickly (i.e.from soldering), then the device could be damaged.
If a device is opened for a long period of time, it's suggested to dry back the device. There's addi
tional info regarding moisture sensitivity in chapter 10 the databook.
Solution 2:
The ceramic and hermetically sealed packages Xilinx offers should not have this problem.
