Problem Title:
2.1i: 9500/XL: What does TIE and PGND mean in the fitter report?
Problem Description:
Urgency: Standard
General Description:
In the Fitter report, unused pins are labeled as TIE or PGND, depending
on implementation settings. What does TIE and PGND mean?
Solution 1:
Whether you see TIE or PGND depends on the settings chosen in the
Implementation options section.
If "Create Programmable Ground Pins on Unused I/O" is not selected, the
report will have TIE on the unused pins. Pins marked TIE are floating.
TIE signifies that the pin is floating and that Xilinx recommends that
the pin be tied to a known value. Tying the pin to a known value lowers
power consumption as well as reduces noise issues.
If the above option is selected, the unused pins will have PGND on them.
PGND means Programmable Ground and ties the unused pins to the internal
device ground plane. The benefits of PGND are improved when the pin is
externally tied to ground.
