M1.5: Floorplanner FAQ: Differences between M1 and XACT

Problem Description:
Urgency: Standard

General Description: This solution record describes the major differences
between M1 and Xact. In appearance and general manner of operation,
they are very similar. All of the major functions provided in XACT are still provided in M1.

Solution 1:

The main differences are:

1- Infrastructure changes required to integrate the tool into the M1 flow.
Because the underlying files (.ngd, .ncd) in M1 are different from that in
XACT (.map, .lca) a whole new system needed to be created to support
floorplanning.

2- Area-based floorplanning is a truly new and powerful function to help
large FPGA designs. This was not a significant capability in XACT.
