Cable - Can Xchecker cable or Parallel cable be used for downloading to any device? ( Virtex
or spartan )
Problem Description:
Urgency: Standard
General Description
Can Xchecker cable or Parallel Cable (DLC5) be used for programming any device?
Solution 1:
Both the XChecker and Parallel Cable (DLC5) can be used to configure Virtex
using Slave-Serial and JTAG (boundary scan) mode. Note: version 2.1i (or newer)
should be used if programming via JTAG.
There is a 5V FPGA inside of the XChecker pod, so a VCC of 5V should be
supplied to the cable. Using the 3.3V XChecker power adaptor will guarantee the
cable to work. However, the following two methodologies have been known to work:
1: Supply the XChecker cable with a 5V supply with common ground and connect
the remaining pins directly.
2: Simply connect the XChecker cable to a 3.3V supply and connect the remaining
pins directly.
The 3.3V should be just enough power to allow the FPGA in the pod to operate
and as long as the output signals from the board to the XChecker swing to 3.3V,
this is high enough to register a logic '1' in TTL. Vcco must be set to 3.3V for
Banks 2 and 3, and VCCint set to 2.5V.
The parallel cable can be directly connected to the Virtex part. Vcco set to
3.3V for Banks 2 and 3, and VCCint set to 2.5V.
Note: When using either of the download cables, VCCO for Banks 2 and 3
must be set to a standard that uses 3.3V so that the Virtex device will be able
to drive the signals back to the cable.
