In the case of the 1.5 release, the version of JRE was 1.1.3, and the font-related data filies are located in <install_dir>\cg158ntr\java1.1.3\pc\lib. The problem of squares appearing instead of letters may be due to corrupted Windows fonts. Installing Windows NT Service Pack 4 corrected the problem in one customer case.
