HDSL

Taking E1/T1 Farther for Less

HDSL enables data transmission at speeds up to 2.320 Mbps over unconditioned twisted-pair copper cabling. Full duplex operation, adaptive line equalization and 2B1Q modulation combine to maximize the bandwidth capacity of the copper media. HDSL technology also eliminates the need for repeaters, thereby simplifying installation and reducing maintenance costs. Single pair transmission ranges of up to 15,000 feet at T1 and 4,200 meters at E1 make HDSL an ideal solution for local loop applications.

Originally developed by Bellcore, HDSL/T1/E1 technologies have been standardised by ANSI in the U.S. and by ETSI in Europe. The ANSI standard covers two-pair T1 transmission, with a data rate of 784 kbps on each twisted pair. ETSI standards exist both for a two-pair E1 system, with each pair carrying 1,168 kbps, and a three-pair E1 system, with 784 kbps on each twisted pair. Metalink's new single-pair E1 and T1 systems deliver 1,552 and 2,320 kbps data rates respectively.

Now is the Time to Cash In on HDSL

For carriers and communications service providers striving for rapid, economical service deployment, maximal utilization of copper infrastructure is a key requirement. Although many providers view optical fiber as the ultimate transmission medium for future applications, few are ready to revamp their entire cable plant. In fact, studies have shown that copper is still the media of choice in the majority of new installations worldwide.

Accordingly, HDSL deployment has risen sharply in recent years, exceeding 100K lines in 1995. With a healthy growth rate of over 50 percent, 500K lines are expected to be in place by 1997.

Telecommunications equipment vendors can capitalize on this window of opportunity by applying Metalink's HDSL technology to a wide range of applications:

T1/E1 transceivers and repeaters
DLC equipment
CSU/DSUs
Short haul modems
Pair-gain products
Primary rate ISDN access devices
Multiplexers

Metalink offers its HDSL technology in packages ranging from basic chipsets to full turnkey OEM solutions. So, even with minimal development resources, you can add HDSL to your portfolio of technology solutions.

NEW SINGLE-PAIR HDSL E1 REACHES OVER 4 KILOMETERS

Metalink has broken both media and distance barriers with HDSL technology that transmits E1 data more than 4,200 meters over a single 0.5 mm copper pair. Such a significant expansion of copper wire bandwidth capacity has been made possible by Metalink's proprietary NML (near maximum likelihood) decoding algorithm, which is combined with standard 2B1Q line coding to enable data transmission at up to 2,320 kbps.
