Spartan-XL Family FPGAs

The Spartan-XL Family of FPGAs is the only complete line of low cost FPGAs that feature on-chip RAM and broad support for predefined cores.  The Spartan-XL products are available in densities ranging from 5,000 to 40,000 system gates. The new Spartan-II Family extends the Spartan Series beyond 100,000 gates.

Pricing for the XCS05XL now begins at $2.49 for 250,000-unit quantities, with the XCS40XL at $7.40 in the same quantities.  The new Spartan-II Family continues to dramatically reduce cost.

Spartan-XL Family New Features

Low Power and Power Down

By reducing the power supply to 3.3V, the Spartan-XL Family consumes less than half the power of the 5V devices.  A PowerDown pin reduces ICC to 100 microamps typical.

High Speed

The Spartan-XL Family offers extremely high speed.  The dedicated carry logic for counters and arithmetic applications has been optimized for speed, allowing counters to run well over 120 MHz.

SelectRAM Flexibility

The Spartan-XL Family is the only ASIC replacement FPGA family that offers on-chip user RAM, in the form of SelectRAM memory.  This distributed RAM can be used for efficient FIFOs, shift registers, and scratch pad memories.

Software Support

The Spartan-XL Family, with all its new features, is fully supported by version 2.1i of the Xilinx Alliance and Foundation development systems.  In addition, there are several core solutions available today for the Spartan-XL Family, including a 33 MHz, 32 bit PCI master/slave LogiCORE solution.  A programmable option on the Spartan-XL device allows compliance with either 3.3V or 5V PCI interfaces.

New Chip Scale Packaging Saves Space

Xilinx has announced new 144-ball and 280-ball, 0.8-millimeter pitch chip scale packages for the Spartan-XL FPGA family.  Xilinx is the first programmable logic supplier to offer the CSP package for an FPGA that meets the JEDEC Level 3 moisture sensitivity level requirements.  This level of reliability enables customers to reduce standard manufacturing cycle times and further minimize overall system cost.
