XILINX ANNOUNCES JAVA SUPPORT FOR VIRTEX FPGAs

First company to support new JEDEC- standard STAPL language

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 5, 1999—Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced programming support for the Virtex series using the Java application procedure interface (API) for Boundary-Scan (IEEE Std 1149.1 commonly known as JTAG).

"Coupling the power and flexibility of the Virtex architecture with the ubiquity and industry-wide support of Java and the customer acceptance of the JTAG standard provides designers with a complete solution for network reconfiguration," said Dennis Segers, senior vice president and general manager of the high-end FPGA business unit. "Our technology enables customers to harness the Internet to develop a wide range of never-before imagined reconfigurable systems."

This free Web-downloadable software package includes a reference implementation of the API, full documentation, source code, and Xilinx Virtex configuration algorithms. Systems designers and test engineers who design boundary-scan systems can take full advantage of the power and portability of Java coupled with the full industry-wide support of the JTAG standard to produce Xilinx Internet Reconfigurable Logic (IRL) solutions

For those users of the recently announced JEDEC STAPL, Xilinx will provide a mechanism to allow the STAPL file format to be incorporated into the Java environment now and will also provide native STAPL support in 3Q99.

"We want to support our customers in whatever programming environment they choose. STAPL is an interim point solution for reconfiguration and test with many limitations," said Evert Wolsheimer, vice president and general manager of the Xilinx CPLD business unit. "We will support STAPL but will continue to focus on Sun Microsystems’ Java with its industry-wide tool acceptance, proven cross-platform portability, and an abundance of commercially available run-time environments to provide our customers with a complete solution."
