FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAN JOSE, Calif., December 8,1997 – Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ: XLNX), today announced that shipments of its popular Foundation Series software, introduced just a year and a half ago, surpassed the 10,000th system during November. The Foundation Series software now accounts for nearly one quarter of all the design systems Xilinx has shipped since the company was founded. Today the total installed base of Xilinx design systems, or "design seats," exceeds 40,000 worldwide. The Foundation Series software, used on Windows NT and Windows 95 PCs, is a complete, ready-to-use design package for Xilinx programmable logic devices. The software features easy-to-use graphical HDL (VHDL and Verilog) design tools, advanced synthesis and optimization technologies, and push-button design flows, enabling designers to produce expert HDL designs in minutes for Xilinx programmable logic devices. "These capabilities, combined with the value and convenience of a complete system package, have led to the market’s overwhelming acceptance of Foundation Series software as the programmable logic software of choice," said Rich Sevick, senior vice president of software at Xilinx. "We see the momentum behind Foundation software continuing to build, especially with customers moving to or standardizing on HDL flows." In addition to the broad acceptance of the Foundation Series software by the commercial market, Xilinx has partnered with Prentice Hall, the premier publisher of engineering books and software for the academic market, to promote the use of programmable logic and HDL methodologies in institutions of higher education. In December, Prentice Hall will begin shipping Xilinx Foundation Series Student Edition to academic bookstores worldwide for use in college-level instruction. The Xilinx Student Edition is available for student purchase only and includes the Foundation Series software, the "Practical Xilinx Designer" lab book—a step-by-step design tutorial—and a discount coupon for FPGA and CPLD prototyping boards. "Xilinx Student Edition is creating a buzz in the marketplace, and it is our most widely requested new engineering product," said publisher Tom Robbins, adding that Prentice Hall has received more than 1,000 pre-publication orders for the software. Founded in 1984, Xilinx is the world’s largest supplier of programmable logic solutions comprising industry leading device architectures and world class design software. Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., the company pioneered the market for field programmable gate array (FPGA) semiconductor devices that provide high integration and quick time-to-market for electronic equipment manufacturers in the computer, peripherals, telecommunications, networking, industrial control, instrumentation, consumer and high reliability/military markets.
