Overview

Xilinx offers superior system level solutions to meet the needs for today's demanding computer applications. Xilinx and its partners deliver building blocks and expertise to meet the spectrum of needs that include fast time-to-market, portability, high performance processing and throughput, and most importantly — low cost. Spartan FPGAs helps meet the rigid cost constraints by offering an entire family of devices (up to 40,000 programmable system gates) that are all priced under $10.00 eliminating the necessity of designing a custom IC. Xilinx delivers system level solutions for applications including:

  • Computer peripherals - storage devices, specialty printers, point of sale terminals, specialty data capture
  • PC add-in cards: peripheral controllers, multimedia, network interface, algorithm specific or general purpose acceleration cards

Custom-build a product for any market

Through our LogiCORE and AllianceCORE partners program, we offer a wealth of intellectual property in the form of customizable cores and reference designs to speed the development of computing products. System level solutions are available for bus interfaces, FPGA-based processors, memory interfaces, and more. Solutions drawn from our communication and image processing libraries will also provide valuable shortcuts for the development of products for emerging markets, such as PC accelerator cards.

Virtual I/O card reduces cost

When a Virtex FPGA is used to implement peripheral interface products the host computer is in control of the card functionality — defining the operation of the card and the external I/O connector. One card provides the functionality of many cards. Standard cores help you to build libraries of "virtual card" functions that are delivered as software. Stored in the computer disk memory, these virtual peripheral controller designs can be transferred on command to the nonvolatile memory that configures the FPGA.
PCI Bus: the backbone for computer products
PCI bus interfaces are among the most difficult functions to implement. Even with a custom IC, performance and electrical specifications are difficult to meet. Through the collaboration of our core and FPGA designers, Xilinx has achieved a powerful system level solution that is easily customized to meet specific system requirements. PCI Cores are offered as a 33 MHz, 32-bit core or as a 66 MHz, 64-bit core) are now available as drop-in building blocks. They can be integrated with other functions in a single chip and provide a far more cost-effective solution than commonly used standard chip sets.
