Lucent Squeezes All the Computer Power of a Six Unit 
Compact-PCI Board into a Single Xilinx CoolRunner CPLD

"I am the proud papa of the Lucent Compact-PCI Speech Processing Board which was announced at the CT Expo, Spring 1999.  To squeeze all of this computer power into a single six unit compact PCI board, I used a signle Xilinx CoolRunner PZ3960 CPLD to control nearly all of the high-speed logic, including three PowerPC processors, three seperate SDRAM memory systems, and the 66 MHz bussing system among them," said Larry Tomko, Lucent Technologies.

"Since I make a lot of mistakes," continued Tomko, "one of my requirements is a chip that will support register-to-register speeds of 15 nanoseconds or less, independent of location on the chip or number of product terms.  The CoolRunner CPLD satisfied that need and it's SRAM-based design allows us to make field logic upgrades as easily as software fixes."

"This design experience has been fun and I look forward to using this family of chips and software again."

Lucent's Compact PCI Speech Processing Board complements Lucent's overall Speech Processing Solutions product line, which includes the Lucent Speech Server and a set of industry-standard PC cards. The new Compact PCI board will be available this summer.
