Q. What are the basic issues that need to be considered when designing
an upgradable system?
A. Upgradable systems need to be analyzed in terms of their frequency of upgrade, network reliability, and estimated life expectancy. It is important to design in ruggedness and room to upgrade for all these systems. For once and awhile upgrades, slight modifications to standard systems are workable. For example, it is likely that duplicate area of non-volatile storage (hard drive, EEPROM, etc.) is advisable to protect against against network dropout. For dynamic reconfiguration, direct programming and advanced tools like JBits can help solve many of these high speed issues. It is always important to select an FPGA that has enough room to add future updates.
