NEW XILINX FPGA DESIGN SOLUTION BREAKS SPEED RECORD
 
Advances in process and software delivers up to 30 percent performance improvement

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 8, 1998—Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX), the leader in programmable logic performance and density, announced today the availability of a new speed grade in the XC4000XL FPGA family. The new speed grade, designated by –08 ("dash 08"), delivers a total performance increase of up to 30 percent due to the combination of process advancements software technology included in the next generation of Foundation Series and Alliance Series software. 

"Our cooperative engineering efforts with our technology partner, United Microelectronics Corporation Group in Taiwan, resulted in a process that is optimum for the Xilinx silicon architecture," said Dennis Segers, vice president and general manager of the high end FPGA business unit at Xilinx. "Additionally, our internal benchmarking data has shown this speed grade and the runtime and performance improvements in the tools to be the industry's fastest available solution." 

Xilinx has been working with UMC Group over the last six months specifically to tune the 0.35-micron process for yield and performance in this family. These efforts have resulted in substantial improvement in hardware performance. Adjusting multiple threshold voltage levels and the electrical channel length contribute to the improved SRAM-based FPGA performance. The unique partnership established over two years ago between UMC Group and Xilinx—a partnership rarely found between foundries and customers—allows this specialization to occur. 

"Through advances in the software algorithms and design flows we have delivered significant performance improvements," said Rich Sevcik, senior vice president of software and cores. "In our benchmark studies of our next generation software, we have also seen runtime improve up to 50 percent across the board for all our product families." 

The initial device with the new speed grade is available now for the XC4036XL device and available on other members of the family in July. Pricing for the XC4036XL begins at $64 in 5,000-piece quantities by the end of 1998. 

Xilinx Alliance and Foundation Series software has the largest installed base of programmable logic device design tools in the industry. Xilinx software has out sold its nearest competitor by over 150 percent in the most recent quarter.
