VIRTEXTM FPGA EDGES OUT ASIC IN NEW FAMILY OF TEKTRONIX
LOGIC ANALYZERS
Virtex device provides low power consumption combined with breakthrough speed

SAN JOSE, Calif., September 23, 1999 — XilinxÒ, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) announced today that technology leader Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE: TEK), chose the Virtex XCV300TM FPGA device, instead of an ASIC, specifically for its TLA 700 Rambus adapter. Tektronix selected the Virtex FPGA because of its versatility and overall performance.

"A digital design engineer operates in an environment of accelerating technological change under extreme time-to-market conditions," said Steve Jennings, director of marketing for Tektronix’ Measurement Business Division. "This new integrated solution provides superior measurement and analysis capabilities for even the most challenging design areas like Rambus memory systems and next generation microprocessors."

Tektronix recently announced its new suite of performance-leading instruments designed for the most challenging leading-edge digital design applications. The integrated tool set is composed of the TLA 714/720 portable and bench top logic analyzers, the TDS694C digital storage oscilloscope, and complementary connection devices that work together to provide specialized features and optimized performance.

"The Virtex FPGA provides field upgradablity of the code, which is critical in this fast moving, cutting-edge application, so an ASIC was not an option in this design," said Brainard Brauer, a Tektronix design engineer. "High register count is a key to our bus decoding implementation, once de-serialized into a wide, parallel pipe-line architecture. The Virtex device provided the lower power consumption we needed with higher useable register densities than previous devices and, at the same time, it provided the tight set up and hold specifications needed for this application across a wide temperature range."

"Virtex FPGAs have aided us in de-serializing the Rambus control and data buses into a parallel format. This in turn enables the TLA 700 Logic Analyzer to trigger on the control packet, which is essential in debugging 800 MHz Rambus designs," said Brauer.

The Virtex FPGAs range from 50,000 to 1,000,000 system gates at clock speeds up to 200 MHz, and include many features that address system-level design challenges. Virtex devices are equipped with four delay lock loops (DLL), allowing for both internal and external clock synchronization with low clock skew.

The new family of logic analyzers, the TLA 714 and the TLA 720, is replacing the original TLA 704/711. The analyzers offer an industry-leading combination of acquisition speed, channel width, and memory depth, all of which are essential for supporting next-generation microprocessor designs. Now offering up to 16M, the TLA 714/720 have the deepest memory configuration in the industry plus an innovative hardware-assisted display system to simplify the management of such a large memory.

About Tektronix
Tektronix is a portfolio of measurement, color printing, and video and networking businesses dedicated to applying technology excellence to customer challenges. Tektronix is headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon, and has operations in 26 countries outside the United States. Founded in 1946, the company had revenues of approximately $1.9 billion in fiscal 1999. On June 24, 1999, Tektronix announced its intentions to form two separate, publicly traded companies. One company will be comprised of Tektronix’ Measurement Business Division; the other company will be comprised of Tektronix’ Color Printing and Imaging Division. Tektronix intends to complete this transition by the end of fiscal 2000. Additionally, on August 9, 1999, the company announced plans to sell its video and networking business to Grass Valley Group, Inc. The sale is expected to close by the end of September 1999.
