Peter, Thanks for taking the trouble to look this up. I agree that following the official procedures for interpretations and explanations would not be a good use of very limited resources. For example, I looked up the on-line interpretation document for 754, the floating point standard. (The question posed is "why is number/zero signed infinity, instead of nan?). We have resolved more issues that lie in the entire on-line IEEE data base! So let's not go there. It would be a lot more work for little real gain.
