Hi Brian,
I think #2 is the best path.
We need to start to build some momentum behind
the work. If one company's donation gets accepted
and standardized there is little motivation for
other vendors to spend time just to catch up
and implement somebody else's ideas.
If we all work together from all the donations to
architect a solution everybody is on a level playing
field, there is no real head start, and it forces people
to study the problem and the proposed solutions and
vote according to committee rules. It also eliminates
the feeling that some companies have to block just
to make sure the competitors solution doesn't
become a standard.
I think version 1.0 suffered because only a few people
really understood the solution and a lot of people
came in after everything was decided. If we pursue #2
it also opens up for feedback from model developers,
something lacking so far.
