Signal nameing

When looking in the IEEE 1076-1993 and in the VITAL LRM they state
"signal identifier_list"
identifier_list refers to identifier
identifier refers to "basic_identifier | extended_identifier"

When I reviewed the drafts for VITAL I found where it was recommended
that just the basic_identifier be used for signal naming. I could not
find in any of the LRM's (including IEEE P1076.6) mandating the use of
just the basic_identifier for signal names.

I remember alot of discussions about naming conventions but I need to
find it in the LRM.

This issue has arose due to a vendor producing signal names utilizing
special characters.
