XILINX'S FOURTH QUARTER REVENUES UP 3% SEQUENTIALLY

SAN JOSE, CA, APRIL 23, 1998 -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced fourth quarter fiscal 1998 revenue was $153.8 million, up 3.4% from $148.7 million for the immediately prior quarter. Operating income for the fourth quarter was $42.5 million, an increase of 3.5% over $41.1 million for the prior quarter. Fourth quarter net income was $30.6 million, or $0.39 per share (diluted).

Fiscal 1998 revenue totaled $613.6 million, up 8% from $568.1 million for fiscal 1997. Net income was $126.6 million, or $1.58 per share, up 15% from $110.4 million or $1.39 per share in fiscal 1997.

"I am pleased with the results of the March quarter," remarked Wim Roelandts, Xilinx's chief executive officer. "Despite lackluster results for the semiconductor industry as a whole, Xilinx increased sales and gained PLD market share. I continue to be encouraged by the progress we are making with our flagship XC4000X family, which grew more than 50% sequentially, and with the sales of our design software. During the March quarter, Xilinx sold over 4,500 software systems. During the March quarter a year ago, we sold 1,700 units. We presently have over 42,000 cumulative software seats in the hand of our customers."

Fiscal Year 1998 - Key Accomplishments

  • Delivered on key objectives set forth in product roadmap. In February 1997, Xilinx unveiled a strategic product roadmap calling for the delivery of high density FPGAs using advanced deep submicron process technology. Four months later, Xilinx was shipping 10 members of the 0.35um, 3.3 volt XC4000X family in volume. Not only does this family represent the fastest product roll-out in Xilinx's history, but it continues to be Xilinx's fastest ramping product family as well. Late in fiscal 1998, Xilinx marked another industry milestone with the sampling of the XC40125XV device, the industry's largest FPGA in terms of the number of gates and the first to be manufactured using 0.25um process technology.
  • Gained share in CPLD market. During fiscal 1998, CPLD revenues grew 94% while units more than doubled. This growth is largely attributable to the success of the XC9500 CPLD, which offers customers in-system programming at the industry's most competitive price points.
  • Achieved clear core leadership. Xilinx has become the industry's leading core solutions provider, licensing over 300 internally developed PCI LogiCORE products. Xilinx also supports over 20 DSP LogiCORE modules. Additionally, Xilinx has partnerships with 23 leading third party core developers currently producing 50 products.
  • Created more powerful software solutions. In June 1997, Xilinx and Synopsys established an exclusive partnership enabling Xilinx to incorporate Synopsys FPGA Express technology into the Xilinx Foundation series. The new package, which began shipping in the fourth quarter, allows Xilinx to provide advanced synthesis technology needed for high-density FPGA devices. The release of this version was instrumental in helping Xilinx to achieve record design seat sales during the March quarter.
  • Fortified position as industry's leading innovator. The Spartan series of FPGAs was announced in January 1998, and devices are currently shipping in volume, offering Xilinx customers the industry's only low-cost, high-volume ASIC solution with on-chip RAM. In November 1997, Xilinx announced its next generation IC technology: the Virtex series of FPGAs. This family has been optimized for use with intellectual property cores and will be the industry's first to provide customers with up to one million system gates.
