Overview

Adding new wires to network information appliances brings to mind the tearing down of existing walls, carpeting and floors to lay in place wires. However adding new wires also provides a key advantage - the higher data transfer rates can support the networking of multiple appliances and seamless data, voice, and video transfer.

Data transfer rates for some of the popular new wire interfaces are:

  • RS-232: 115 Kbps
  • Parallel port: 920 Kbps
  • IDE interface bus: 133.6 Mbps
  • USB: 12 Mbps
  • USB 2.0: 480 Mbps
  • IEEE 1394 / FireWire: 400 Mbps
  • Ethernet: 10 Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps
