Bluetooth SIG
The Bluetooth
Special Interest Group (SIG) is an industry group consisting
of leaders in the telecommunications, computing, and networking
industries that are driving development of the technology and bringing
it to market. It will enable users to connect a wide range of computing
and telecommunications devices easily and simply, without the need
to buy, carry, or connect cables. It delivers opportunities for
rapid ad hoc connections, and the possibility of automatic, unconscious,
connections between devices. It will virtually eliminate the need
to purchase additional or proprietary cabling to connect individual
devices.
The Bluetooth SIG is working together to define and
promote an open, royalty-free specification for seamless wireless
connectivity and cable replacement for a wide variety of mobility-enhancing
devices. Bluetooth was originally envisioned as a short-range wireless
connectivity technology to synchronize data between PCs, handheld
devices, and mobile phones, but many of the over 2000 members of
the SIG have been positioning it as a wireless networking technology.
Future revisions to the Bluetooth specification are in works and
intend extending current data rates of ~720 Kbps to support applications
that need higher bandwidths.
