ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

Overview

ADSL modems, the most popular of DSL modems, use multiple channels on the 700 million existing copper phone lines. One channel is used for the standard phone line, while allowing data and voice to be sent simultaneously.

The "A" stands for Asymmetric, referring to the downstream channel being much faster than the upstream channel. This was since the average user spends more time getting information from the web than sending it. Maximum rates, depending on the distance of ones home from the centeral office, are 8 Mbps downstream and 640 Kbps upstream.

Xilinx Solutions
