FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 19, 1999In an aggressive move to further penetrate new applications for programmable logic, Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced new prices for both the Spartan/XL FPGAs and XC9500XL CPLDs. The new prices are targeted at high-volume market segments that use 100,000, 250,000 or more, units such as PC add-on cards, printers, digital modems, SOHO routers, DVD players, graphics/editing, and networking line cards. The new pricing for the Spartan/XL FPGAs, effective on May 10, makes them more cost-effective than ASICs in most high-volume applications. "As we drive up volume, we are removing the barriers to using programmable logic for high-volume customers," said Kapil Shankar, director of marketing, High Volume FPGAs. "The new Spartan/XL prices will open an additional twenty percent of the ASIC market to programmable logic, which is presently dominated by designs with volumes over 250,000 units. The majority of high-volume FPGA applications today require memory and only the Spartan FPGAs can deliver a true ASIC alternative with memory, at a low cost." "Applying the economies of scale to the XC9500XL CPLD family has allowed Xilinx to offer the most cost-effective product-term based logic integration available today," said Scott Lewis, director of marketing, CPLDs. "We have extended our successful flash-based solution for very high-volume users in the 100,000 unit range." The SpartanXL starts at an unprecedented $2.49* for the 5,000 system
gate device and $7.40* for the largest member of the family (40,000 system
gates). Similarly, the XC9500XL pricing for the XC9536XL device is $1.00*.
SpartanXL Pricing and XC9500XL Pricing for High-Volume Applications
The Xilinx Spartan and SpartanXL FPGA families, in volume production since Spring 1998, feature low-cost ASIC replacement solution from 5,00040,000 system gates, high-performance, low power, and SelectRAM memory. The XC9500 in-system programmable (ISP) CPLD family, shipping in volume since Spring 1997, features density ranging from 36 to 288 macrocells, high-performance, low cost solution. Additionally this family is available in chip-scale packaging to meet small form factor requirements. Xilinx is the leading innovator of complete programmable logic solutions, including advanced integrated circuits, software design tools, predefined system functions delivered as cores, and unparalleled field engineering support. Founded in 1984 and headquartered in San Jose, Calif., Xilinx invented the field programmable gate array (FPGA) and commands more than half of the world market for these devices today. Xilinx solutions enable customers to significantly reduce the time required to develop products for the computer, peripheral, telecommunications, networking, industrial control, instrumentation, high-reliability/military, and consumer markets.
