Adtech Finds Using Virtex FPGAs Allows Them to Provide Huge Cost Savings and Convenience for Their Customers
Adtech is a leading manufacturer of broadband test systems primarily for networking developers, research & development and manufacturing segments of the rapidly growing digital telecommunications market. Basically, what we do is we build boxes that people can slap onto networks and you can generate test traffic, introduce errors and then you can also read back the traffic, analyze your errors, look at timing latencies and things like that. According to Ed Nakamoto, "Our latest product is the OC48 Analyzer Generator and we just started shipping it so we’re actually making money with it now. In this product, we have included seven Virtex V1000s and the Virtex V1000s are used to both generate and to analyze traffic at 2.4 Gbits per second. The Virtex V1000s were key to this design because of their density and their speed. It doesn’t run at 2.4 Gbits per second, we do a serial to parallel conversion and we parallelize the data and we process the data at about 15 MHz, but when we’re looking for parts that could do this there was nothing out there that could process the Y parallel data at that kind of speed. Another key feature of the Virtex RAM is the internal block RAM. It turns out that it is very convenient for us to use this block RAM to implement things like FIFOs and dual port RAMs, and these RAMS can run very fast. A neat feature of this is we can do data-width conversion. For instance, we can put in 16-bit wide data but take out 32-bit wide data and that actually saves a little bit of logic and it’s a pretty neat feature. The third important feature for us is the reprogramability of Virtex parts. It turns out that because we can reprogram the parts, we can make quick changes for our customers, get the bug fixes, we can implement new features, we can basically create new products and sell it to our customers as a software upgrade, so that’s another key feature." "Right now our Virtex designs are using VHDL and we are using Synplicity for synthesis. This tool has worked very well for us. It allows us to do very quick turn arounds on the design and right now we’re able to design seven of these parts in fairly quick order and get the product to market. On another note, since this product is currently shipping, we are also working on another product right now and we are going to go ahead and implement some Virtex V300s in this next design we’re doing. So, we are very happy with this Virtex family and it has done everything we wanted it to do. The speed and density, for us, was the only thing out there that we could use."
