Success StoryGTE's Encryptor Project:In electronic design, three months can feel like a heartbeat. But that's all the time GTE had if the Interim FASTLANE project was to make it to the JWID (Joint Warfare Interoperability Demonstration), the government demonstration for electronic products held each September. The Interim FASTLANE project was a proof-of-concept prototype for a
larger project -- known as FASTLANE -- to develop an encryptor for classified
ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks. The Interim FASTLANE encryptor
would provide a secure mechanism for transferring data over a public network.
The implementation of the encryptor was a two-board system called "red
card" and "black card," respectively. Each board on the Interim FASTLANE
project contained three Xilinx FPGAs, along with approximately 40 additional
components.
