Designed and constructed by Jeanne Loomis, Award Winning Designer JOIN US IN THE 1999 WALK FOR AIDS! This year, Xilinx hosted the first ever "Walk for Aids Kick Off Rally" on July 29th, 1999. KCBS' Jim Taylor graciously donated his time as emcee. Guest speakers included Xilinx CEO Wim Roelandts, and Synopsys CEO, Aart De Geus . Wim Roelandts and Aart De Geus challenged other Silicon Valley CEOs in a joint press release to join Xilinx and Synopsys in this year's walk to be held on Sunday, October 17, 1999 in downtown San Jose. As a result of the collaborative efforts of Xilinx, Synopsys, the SCCAC (Santa Clara County Aids Coalition) and the *many generous vendors and volunteers of the rally, this year's Walk for Aids promises to surpass previous fund raising efforts. For the last four years, Xilinx has been the leader in its category for raising the most money per employee. In 1998 Xilinx employees raised more than $25,000 from fellow workers, families and a fund-raising auction held at the company before the walk. This year the goal has doubled to $50,000. To find out more how you can become involved in this year's walk, visit the Walk for Aids website at www.walkforaids.org or call Shawna Muren at (408) 451-WALK. Xilinx and the Walk for Aids would like to acknowledge those vendors who graciously donated their time, food, flowers, music and services: Jim Taylor, KCBS
Thank you!
The Children's Shelter of Santa Clara CountyXilinx was a major contributor to the $13.7 million building fund for the Children's Shelter of Santa Clara County, which opened its doors in October 1995. Located adjacent to main Xilinx campus in San Jose, the Children's Shelter provides a safe haven, comprehensive services and short term residential care for abused, neglected and abandoned children ranging from infants to 18 years of age.. The 7.8-acre site provides a home-like setting for children in residential cottages and also includes playgrounds and classrooms, plus a gymnasium, game room and central dining hall.In addition, the company's employee recreation committee regularly provides tickets for the children to attend local cultural events many of which the youngsters otherwise would never have a chance to see such as the musicals Cats, The Phantom of the Opera and the Nutcracker, as well as the San Jose professional soccer team The Clash. Xilinx employees also volunteer at the shelter, and on Halloween, costumed children make their annual “trick-or-treat” trek to the Xilinx campus and load up their bags with goodies distributed by employees. The Children's Shelter Art program is funded through the New Children's
Shelter Fund and the City of San Jose Fine Arts Commission, under the direction
of Ruth Tunstall-Grant and several other

Second Harvest Food BankThe Second Harvest Food Bank provides food, information and support services to hungry people by serving as a central clearing house for donated food in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The Food Bank works in cooperation with non-profit agencies, the food industry, government, volunteers, individuals and local companies like Xilinx. In 1998 the Food Bank distributed more than 16 million pounds of food, helping to feed more than 100,000 people each month. It also operates the largest canned food drive in the nation. In support of that effort, Xilinx literally opens its doors to the organization during its annual winter Holiday Food Drive. Throughout November and December, more than 1,000 Xilinx employees bring non-perishable food items to work and fill up the large Food Bank collection barrels that are placed in buildings throughout the San Jose campus and emptied weekly. A number of Xilinx employees also volunteer their time working at the Food Bank warehouse. Second Harvest Food Bank
Oster Elementary SchoolThis year Xilinx completed its first year of working with nearby Oster Elementary School in San Jose. One goal for the educational partnership is to get more people involved in the task of teaching youngsters, broadening their experience and expanding their horizons. Another goal is to create a mutually beneficial relationship that draws on the talents of people at the company and the school to enhance the education of Oster students in meaningful ways.By all measures the past year was a success and paid off handsomely for Oster students. Activities ranged from a science fair at Xilinx and a drive to add hundreds of new books to the school's collection to regular visits by classroom readers from Xilinx. There was even a special performance at the school by musicians from the San Jose Symphony, which the company supports as a corporate sponsor. The students also have profited from the culturally diverse and highly educated Xilinx workforce in San Jose. Bilingual Xilinx employees, for instance, have tutored newly arrived children from other countries such as China, making the transition to English language education much easier. And Xilinx employees participated in Career Day at the school, telling children about the interesting job possibilities that await them, from electrical engineering and financial planning to software development and chip manufacturing. Xilinx employees who have children enrolled at the school also played
a key role in organizing a recent silent auction that raised about $11,000,
including Xilinx matching donations, to replace the school's aging outdoor
sign and bulletin board. Proceeds also will go to buy additional educational
supplies not in the school's budget.
408 266-8121 Rolling ReadersRolling Readers is California's largest non-profit children's literacy organization, and Xilinx serves as the on-site sponsor for the San Jose chapter, providing office space and support of an AmeriCorps community service worker who administers the program. A number of Xilinx employees have themselves been actively involved in the program as volunteers. Assigned to various schools in the area, employees use their lunch hour to read to an entire class for at least 30 minutes or work one-on-one with children who are identified as reading below grade level. Teachers report that the Rolling Readers program brings an air of excitement and variety to the classroom, and Xilinx employees share their enthusiasm about the joy they get from reading.
