Video and image processing is another market that requires high performance
solutions. The real time nature of video data streams requires real time
performance that previously has not been available in a programmable solution.
Two dimensional processing algorithms such as convolution (2D FIR filters)
for image processing and pattern recognition, image compression using wavelet
and DCT transforms and image resizing algorithms map efficiently into programmable
logic. New FPGA technology has made the economics of custom IC design unattractive
for many applications such as medical image processing.
The risk in releasing products that support unstable new standards
is reduced.
