Overview
Residential Gateways (synonymous with service gateways, home gateways,
and access devices) are a key part of the home networking solution.
They provide a platform for integrating different broadband access
technologies and several home networking solutions.
The “fat” broadband access pipe connects the home with the Internet
or network backbone. The digital modem downloads and uploads data,
voice, and video, and provides Internet access to the home. While
traditional modems connected to only one PC or TV the role of the
digital modem and PC is expanding from being the only connection
to the Web, to a box that provides home networking and Internet
access to multiple information appliances.
Based on the geographic, market, and consumer needs several gateways
will evolve. Combinations supporting one or many broadband access
types and several home networking technologies will make this a
difficult market to predict. The residential gateway could evolve
from a PC, set-top box, digital modem, gaming console, SOHO router,
home servers, screen phones, into a newly evolved device, perhaps
something not even conceived today.
Market Research
The Cahners In-Stat Group’s analyses indicate that the worldwide
residential gateway marketplace will explode to $8.9 billion in
revenues by 2003. The analysis also suggests that the revenue growth
will have a small increase from 1999 to 2000 but the fastest growth
should be expected from 2001.
Market Trends
But the real market potential is huge. This will be made possible
by eliminating key growth inhibitors. Reducing delays and confusion
by establishing standards and defining clearer business models will
help grow the market much bigger. By focusing on market accelerators
such as high-speed broadband access, home networking will itself
gain acceptance. Encouragement through government legislation will
surely assist in the implementation of residential gateways. Value-added
services such as energy management (automatic meter reading) and
security will cause an even faster deployment of home gateways.
Xilinx Solutions
The Xilinx's Spartan-II programmable logic solutions offer the
flexibility to build products that can be reprogrammed in the field
at costs far below any other programmable solution.
Residential gateway products will support multiple broadband access
points and home networking interfaces. Spartan-II FPGAs provide
system integration and interconnectivity to these interfaces, hence
providing decreased time-to-market, increased time-in-market and
the rapid product proliferation in this market. Please view the
