Communications application, traditionally one of the strongest FPGA
market segments, benefit from FPGA solutions. The ability to test new computationally
intensive communications algorithms such as Turbo codes and MAP decoders
(yields 1.5 dB better signal to noise for high data rates) in real time
over a real channel helps to speed the introduction of the new standards
such as CDMA2000 and WCDMA.
FPGAs move digital processing closer to the antenna enabling cellular
infrastructure smart antennas. Algorithms can also independently process
signals from two antennas and dynamically pick the best results.
“Software radio” now becomes “configurable radio”. FPGAs process data
sample rate above 100 MHz. Satellite modems, cellular infrastructure, and
