Based on the availability of leading edge, high density, high performance FPGAs, the demand for cores has rapidly increased. Xilinx is the leader in providing complete core solutions including easy to use parameterizable core delivery software, integration with system level tools, and a multitude of system level modules. In addition to reducing design complexity and time to market pressures over ASICs, the combination of Xilinx CORE Solutions and Xilinx FPGAs has resulted in an exciting evolution in FPGA technology. With low priced FPGAs, you have significant advantages such as design flexibility and system integration, which allow you to replace many standard devices. The CORE Generator system is the delivery mechanism for our cores. It offers a simple user interface, complete cataloging of available cores, easy selection of core parameters for customization, system tools integration, and the ability to directly access the most recent cores on the Xilinx Web site. Cores made with Xilinx Smart-IP™ technology provide flexibility while maintaining their performance and predictability regardless of device size and the number of cores used in the device. Smart-IP technology combines the power of the Xilinx implementation software with the unique features of the Xilinx FPGA architectures to give you cores with consistent performance, no matter where you place them. The LogiCORE program is the Xilinx in house core development effort providing pre-implemented and verified system level functions such as Xilinx DSP and Xilinx PCI (using Smart-IP technology) that are sold and supported directly by Xilinx. Our AllianceCORE program is a cooperative venture between Xilinx and independent third party core developers providing a broad range of industry standard core solutions optimized for Xilinx programmable logic devices. Xilinx offers a number of reference designs that you can use as an educational tool for implementing functions in Xilinx programmable logic devices. Application notes and supporting design files for these designs are available for download from the Xilinx Web site. LogiBLOX products, which are included with all Xilinx development systems, provide simple logic functions and feature tight integration with design entry packages. Xilinx field programmable gate arrays, when combined with DSP cores, create very high performance DSP applications. This programmable DSP solution offers a new alternative to multiple, high end DSP processors; it costs less, uses less power, and requires fewer components. DSP cores are customized with your parameters and then delivered through the CORE Generator system.
Xilinx DSP Outperforms Multiple DSP Processors
With Xilinx DSP, parallel processing is used to implement multiply accumulate operations (MACs) at up to 10 times the throughput of the fastest DSP processor and at one-fifth the cost. Standard DSP functions are implemented in a library of Xilinx DSP cores that are listed in the table on page 17. Xilinx PCI is the industry's only solution that integrates a PCI interface, FIFOs, and user logic on one FPGA at a lower price than standard PCI chips. Supporting fully compliant, zero wait state PCI designs, Xilinx PCI is the best solution for PCI add-in boards, CompactPCI, and embedded PCI applications.
